Farmer breaks records in 100, 200 and wins long jump to help Challengers earn District 2 boys championship

No stranger to big-time performances for Cascade Christian, junior Deryk Farmer put on a show during the two-day Class 3A District 2 track and field championships in Brookings.

Farmer, a three-sport athlete who also excels on the Challengers’ football and boys basketball teams, collected two school records and three individual titles overall in leading the Cascade Christian boys to a district title.

Farmer scored his first school record by winning the 100-meter dash in 10.96 seconds, besting the standard set by Brandon Williams of 11.04 in 2013.

Williams saw another one of his records fall in the 200 — this one also shared by Connor Kirkpatrick — when Farmer crossed the finish line in 22.25 seconds for another district championship. Williams (2013) and Kirkpatrick (2009) previously shared the school’s record in the 200 at 22.72.

Farmer went on to place first in the boys long jump at 21 feet, 7.5 inches, and the Challengers won eight district championships overall to score 163 points and finish well ahead of runner-up Douglas (143.5).

Sebastion Hehn swept the distance races for Cascade with wins in the 1,500 (4:23.99) and 3,000 (9:18.22), while Isaac Young won the 800 (2:02.61) and the Challengers won both boys relays.

St. Mary’s saw Aiden DeBoer win the boys high jump at 5-7.25 to help the Crusaders fifth in the team competition.

Cascade Christian’s girls team finished second to Coquille, 167-136, while St. Mary’s finished fourth with 73 points.

Morgan Samhammer paved the way for the Challengers with a first-place showing in the girls 400 (1:00.49), while Elizabeth McGill won the girls high jump for St. Mary’s at 4-9 on a tiebreaker in jumps with Cascade’s Kyla Kleinsasser, who also cleared 4-9.

Rogue River’s Reagan Alden soared to 9-9.75 to win the girls pole vault.
