Local and national dignitaries joined members of the Rogue Valley community Monday to honor fallen servicemen and servicewomen at Memorial Day ceremonies.
Events were held in Eagle Point, Ashland, Shady Cove, Medford and online statewide. A “Taps Across America” ceremony was planned at 3 p.m., when people were asked to go to their front porch and play a version of “Taps.”
At Eagle Point National Cemetery, speakers included U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore.; U.S. Rep. Cliff Bentz, R-Ontario; and Dr. Denise To of the Defense POW/MIA accounting agency. Other participants included the Southern Oregon Scottish Bagpipe Band, Marine Corps League, Army Funeral Honors Team, Rogue Valley Young Marines,
White City Sea Cadets and Old Guard Riders.
Also in Eagle Point, the Avenue of the Flags included 175 flags placed along a route that began at Highway 62 and led to the national cemetery. There also was a jet flyover at the cemetery shortly after noon.
In Ashland, the Ashland Brass Band played at Mt. View Cemetery in an event hosted by BSA Scout Troop 112, and Memory Gardens Mortuary & Memorial Park hosted a ceremony, as did Hillcrest Mortuary in Medford. In Shady Cove, a flag-raising ceremony and community breakfast was held at City Hall.
