ASHLAND — Ayla Davies ended an unprecedented freshman season as the NAIA Softball Pitcher of the Year and a pair of Southern Oregon senior outfielders joined her on the All-America list that was released Tuesday by the national office.

Davies was a first-team selection along with Sarah Kerling, and Kailer Fulton made the second team five days after the Raiders secured their fourth national championship in six years.

Davies, a rise-balling right-hander from Burns, became not only the first Raider ever to win the NAIA’s official top pitching award, but the first player ever out of the Cascade Conference. She punctuated her case by claiming the MVP award at the World Series, where she pitched eight consecutive complete games, compiled a 1.26 ERA, threw four shutouts and set a tournament record with 71 strikeouts.

On the season, Davies finished 38-5 with six saves, a 1.20 ERA, 36 complete games and 19 shutouts. She struck out 312 batters across 297 innings and had a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 7.4-to-1. Opponents batted just .188 against her.

Those numbers put her in elite company. On the NAIA’s all-time single-season list, she positioned herself at No. 4 in shutouts, No. 7 in wins, No. 10 in complete games, and No. 11 in innings pitched.

Kerling, a four-year starter in center field, and Fulton, a four-year starter in left field, both went out at the top of their games.

Kerling’s total of 94 hits ranked fourth in the country. The Livermore, Calif., product led the Cascade Conference with a career-high .445 batting average from the left side, totaling 47 runs scored, 42 RBIs, 23 stolen bases and 15 extra-base hits. A three-time CCC Gold Glove winner, Kerling was selected to the World Series All-Tournament team for the second time and left SOU with 251 career hits — the fourth-most in program history.

Fulton earned her first All-America nod with a career-best .419 batting average, which ranked second only to Kerling among CCC players. She led the circuit with 60 runs scored, drove in 25, and stole 39 bases on 41 attempts. On SOU’s career lists, she finished third in stolen bases (99), fourth in runs (174) and eighth in hits (199).

With Kerling and Fulton on the team, the Raiders went 195-54 combined.

A championship parade and celebration of the Southern Oregon University softball team’s NAIA World Series title is set for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Ashland.  The Raiders will make their way from the corner of Mountain Avenue and Siskiyou Boulevard to the front of Lithia Motors Pavilion for a trophy presentation.

SOU completed an improbable run through the World Series elimination bracket with seven consecutive wins to become national champions for the fourth time in six years.
