Rogue River spring Chinook.

River flows were heavy this week, and area lakes continue to fill, fed by seasonal rains and snowmelt. Rogue River flows below Lost Creek Lake were a high 4,190 cubic feet per second on Wednesday.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife continues to stock area lakes and has begun stocking the Rogue River above Lost Creek Lake. Trout season opens in area rivers Monday.

RIVER OUTLOOK

ROGUE: Above Lost Creek Lake, trout stocking is due to take place this week and next week, with 2,515 legal trout to be stocked each week.

River flows past Gold Hill were a high 4,844 cfs Wednesday, and at Grants Pass the flow was 4,940 cfs, but the water was running fairly clear, with turbidity at 5 NTUs and the water temperature at 54.4 degrees. For salmon and steelhead fishing in the Rogue, turbidity levels between 4 and 14 are considered ideal.

The “Hatchery Hole” is closed to all fishing until Aug. 1 and closed to Chinook fishing all year. Avoid wading in and fishing near salmon redds.

Spring Chinook fishing on the lower Rogue will continue to be good as melting snowpack runoff is expected to keep the river cool and high, according to the weekly recreation report issued by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. On the upper Rogue, winter steelhead fishing has been good, but the focus is shifting to spring Chinook.

APPLEGATE: The river flow past Applegate on Wednesday was 2,160 cfs.

LAKE OUTLOOK

AGATE: The reservoir was 100% full as of Tuesday.

APPLEGATE: The reservoir was 98% full as of Wednesday. It is due to be stocked with 15,000 legals and 500 trophy trout this week. Applegate was stocked with additional trout in spring 2022, and plenty of holdovers should be available.

DIAMOND: The lake was about 50% free of ice Wednesday, but no docks were in the water, according to Diamond Lake Resort. The south boat ramp has been plowed. The marina side is starting to open quickly and the ice will be coming off any day. The lake has been stocked with tiger and brown trout, which are intended to assist in controlling illegally introduced tui chub and are catch-and-release only. Anglers are encouraged to check ice conditions with Diamond Lake Resort on the Diamond Lake Resort Facebook page or call 541-793-3333 for updates. Anglers can also check out current lake condition on the lodge’s live feed.

EMIGRANT: The reservoir was 73% full as of Tuesday and multiple boat ramps were usable. Legal trout were stocked several times over the last six weeks. There is a longstanding health advisory for consumption of resident warm water species in the lake for high levels of mercury. Consult the sportfishing regulations or the Oregon Health Authority for more information on consumption guidelines.

EXPO: Stocking has taken place in recent weeks, and the pond is due to receive 1,000 legal trout next week. Expo Pond is at the Jackson County Fairgrounds, adjacent to the access road at Gate 5, at Southern Oregon RV Park. A Jackson County day-use fee or season pass applies for parking here.

FISH: The lake was stocked last week and is due to receive 3,500 legal trout next week. The reservoir was 55% full as of Tuesday. The resort ramp is now open. Any tiger trout caught should be immediately released unharmed.

HOWARD PRAIRIE: The lake was stocked two weeks ago and is scheduled to be stocked with 7,450 legals this week. It was 48% full as of Tuesday. The gravel ramp by the dam is open for launching small boats.

HYATT: The lake is due to get 7,450 legals delivered next week. It was 54% full as of Tuesday.

LAKE OF THE WOODS: The lake is due to be stocked this week with 667 legal trout.

LEMOLO: The lake is due to be stocked with 5,000 legal trout this week. The main road is open.

LOST CREEK: The reservoir was 95% full as of Wednesday. It was stocked with trout several times over the past months, including last week. The Takelma boat ramp is open.

MEDCO: The pond was stocked last week and is scheduled to be stocked with 2,000 legals next week. Medco Pond is a private pond and access can be revoked at any time. Bank anglers should stay away from the east portion of the lake and stay on the road side of the gate with any vehicles.

SELMAC: The lake is to be stocked with 1,000 legals next week, on top of other stockings over the last five weeks. Boat anglers are asked to remove as much vegetation as possible before leaving the ramp, as well as drain and dry their vessel before boating in another waterbody, to control invasive species.

WILLOW: The lake is due to be stocked with 4,000 legals and 1,500 trophy trout this week.
