Crater's Gabriel Grant, shown earlier this season, set a personal record in the long jump at 23 feet, 6.25 inches to win Friday's event at the Oregon Relays in Eugene.

Track and field seems to never skip a beat at Hayward Field and the first day of the Oregon Relays was definitely alive with activity.

Friday had some of the best high school athletes from around the West Coast set meet records in the track and field events, serving as an appetizer for the state championships next month.

And the professional track team Brooks Beasts TC even treated everyone to a world record in the distance medley relay with a time of 9 minutes, 14.98 seconds.

Still in a full day of action, the Crater boys track team was able to turn heads with two individual victories — highlighted by Gabriel Grant having himself a record day in the long jump.

Grant jumped a personal-best of 23 feet, 6.25 inches to become the statewide leader in the event. The senior got the mark on his third jump and didn’t scratch on any of his four attempts.

Tayvon Kitchen added a win in the two-mile run with a time of 8:58.47 in a strong field of 20 runners.

The junior turned in a 63.74 effort over the last lap to beat out Yemane Mulugeta of L.A. Matheson for the victory.

For the girls, North Medford’s Paije Carpenter placed 10th in a loaded javelin field with a PR throw of 122-7 on her first attempt of the day.

PHILLIPS-KLIMEK DISTANCE TWILIGHT: At Phoenix, Eagle Point’s Kendal Yazzolino took first place in the girls 800-meter run at the fourth annual event at Jack Woodward Stadium.

The freshman Yazzolino, who played soccer at St. Mary’s in the fall but hails from Eagle Point, clocked a time of 2 minutes, 32.28 seconds to narrowly edge out Karlie Bettencourt of Crater, who ran a 2:32.63.

The Comets finished first among the girls teams with 23 points earned.

Bella Fortino of St. Mary’s placed second in the 3,000 with a time of 11:28.77 — behind Isabela Coffman of Klamath Union (10:54.63).

For the boys, Kael Feeley also placed second in the 800 with a time of 2:01.47 for Phoenix.

Phoenix scored 10 team points to tie for second place with Klamath Union, and Del Norte won with 20 points.
