PREPS: South, North qualify for boys golf regionals

Grants Pass clinched the Southwest Conference boys golf title and earned an automatic bid to the state tournament Monday at Stone Ridge Golf Course, while runner-up South Medford and fifth-place North Medford sealed their spots with No. 4 Sheldon for the upcoming regional championship qualifier.

South Eugene’s Owen Davis-Piger and Sheldon’s Tim Morach also clinched bids in the Class 6A state tournament as the top two individuals from the SWC not advancing with their team.
In Monday’s final day of the SWC championships, Carson Krauss and Messiah Gilbert of Grants Pass placed first and second, respectively, to help lead the Cavemen to a team victory by 29 strokes over South Medford.
Krauss posted a two-day total of 2-under-par 142 to edge Gilbert (144) by two shots for medalist honors, while Morach was third with a 148.

South Medford sophomore Jed Johnson carded a 72 on Day 1 of the two-day finale and returned to post a 77 in his second round to finish fourth among the individuals — one stroke and one spot ahead of teammate Blake Boutwell (76-74—150).
Dallas Boekenoogen led a tight grouping for North Medford, finishing at 167 overall to edge teammates Jace Gamby (168), Andrew Plankenhorn (169), Caleb Groom (170) and Sam Havens (172) on their own ball.
Also qualifying for the regional tournament for their season-long efforts were South Eugene’s Man Aung Shikhun and Roseburg’s Tyler Popken and Chase Smith.

CRATER SWEEPS TRI-MEET: At Ashland, Crater’s girls team won eight individual events and the 4×100-meter relay to score a victory over Eagle Point and Ashland in the Midwestern League tri-meet with 74 points.
Claire Davenport highlighted the effort with a personal-best height of 5 feet, 3 inches to win the high jump and move into second place on the Class 5A girls leaderboard.
Chloe Borchard swept the hurdles for the Comets with a time of 17.83 seconds to win the 100 hurdles and 50.39 to win the 300.
Addi Dippel (100 meters) and Kamdyn Johnson (200 meters) helped Crater sweep the sprints, and Karli Bettencourt claimed the 800. Abigail Nordahl cleared 6-0 to win the pole vault and Grace Leland went 30-0.5 to earn first-place points in the triple jump.
Ashland placed second in the girls team standings with 46 points, with Wynn Pistole setting a PR of 1 minute, 2.68 seconds to take the 400 and MacKenzie Schmidt doing likewise to win the 1,500 (5:11.40). Ruby Staha (13-9.75) held off Eagle Point’s Kendal Yazzolino (13-9.5) to win the long jump.
Thianna Deng-Gomez posted two field victories to lead Eagle Point’s 42 team points, with the junior winning the shot put (37-2) and discus (93-3), while Vivian Shawnego went 107-5 to take the javelin.
In the boys meet, Crater scored 61 points to complete the sweep, taking both distance races with Ivar Hokanson running 4:13.40 to win the 1,500 and William Shore at 9:09.50 in the 3,000.
Hudson Barsalou recorded a time of 44.85 to take the 300 hurdles for the Comets, while Hunter Verstegen (shot put, 44-6), Adam Keller (pole vault, 12-0) and Dakota Lynch (triple jump, 39-3) also were victorious for Crater.
Ashland was a close second with 57.5 team points after Caden Negra ran a personal-best 50.23 to win the 400 and Cole Beneventi closed in 22.96 to win the 200.
Ananda O’Neill won the 800 (2:10.01) for the Grizzlies, who also got wins from Theodore Williams (110 hurdles, 18.33), Alexander Krause (javelin, 116-0) and Samuel Richner (long jump, 18-11.5).
Eagle Point was edged out at 56.5 points, with Diego Salas leading the way with a victory in the discus (119-5), Griffin Womack winning in the high jump (5-6) and Kaden Webb placing first in the 100 (11.73).

Boys Volleyball
ST. MARY’S 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0: Connor Gibbs contributed eight kills and nine digs to lead St. Mary’s to a 25-14, 25-22, 25-17 victory at South Medford High.
Chris Kranenburg added five kills and was 17-for-17 from the service line with two aces, while C.J. Seggelink contributed 19 assists and eight digs for the Crusaders.
NORTH MEDFORD 3, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2: Host North Medford pulled out a five-set triumph in a back-and-forth match that saw Noah Harrington collect 24 kills and Kellan Kleker added 35 assists for the Challengers.
Nikhil Joseph and Harrington each came up with 10 digs, while Mason Hoffman had eight kills and four aces for Cascade Christian.
