PREPS: Phoenix frosh Giles wins Skyline boys golf title

Phoenix freshman Jordan Giles paced the boys golf field in the two-day Skyline Conference championships at Centennial Golf Club, posting rounds of even-par 72 and 75 to earn medalist honors Thursday.

Giles led the field by 26 strokes and clinched his spot in the upcoming Class 4A state championships at Emerald Valley Golf Course set May 13-14.

Mazama won the team title by posting a combined total of 776 strokes, well ahead of runner-up Henley (906).

Also for Phoenix, senior Garrett Walker finished 11th among the individuals with a two-day 216, while freshman Hayden Holcomb Young was 13th (244).

Baseball

KLAMATH UNION 8, PHOENIX 5: At Talent, Phoenix was unable to make it two straight wins over Klamath Union, with the Pelicans avenging a Tuesday loss for a Skyline Conference win at Hagler-James Field.

Phoenix dropped to 7-15 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

Softball

CRATER 1, NORTH EUGENE 0: At Eugene, Crater pitcher Alexis Perez fanned 16 and allowed only one hit in the Midwestern League road victory.

Crater scored its lone run on five hits in the first inning and Perez made that stand up to improve her record to 6-3.

The Comets moved to 10-7 with their fourth win in five games. They stand 8-2 in MWL play.

PHOENIX 5, KLAMATH UNION 4: At Talent, Phoenix once again showed a flair for the dramatics, scoring three runs in its final at-bat to rally for a Skyline Conference win.

Carsyn Gallegos came through with a pair of triples for the Pirates (11-9, 8-6 Skyline), while Addison Brite was 2-for-3 and Phoenix picked up RBI efforts from Keelie Woodside, Destiny Christlieb and Julie Johnson.

Woodside came on in relief with two outs in the second inning and helped steady the ship by not allowing a hit with one walk and three strikeouts in 4 ⅓ innings inside the circle.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 16-14, SUTHERLIN 6-1: McKenzie Bonner belted a home run to power Cascade Christian to two five-inning victories, 16-6 and 14-1, in a Far West League doubleheader at Lithia & Driveway Fields.

In Game 2, Bonner went 2-for-3 with the home run and two runs for the Challengers (19-5, 13-3 FWL). Carsyn Sousa was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs, while Becca Tuivanu, Danika Brackett and Ashlyn Cooper supplied RBI efforts.

In the circle, Emalee Logan recorded five strikeouts and allowed two hits.

Cooper had an impressive showing with two doubles for two runs and four RBIs in Game 1, going the distance with four strikeouts and four hits allowed.

Bonner added four runs and two RBIs for Cascade Christian, with Tuivanu, Sousa, Josie Scaglione and Isla Ulrich chipping in to account for the team’s 11 RBIs overall.

SOUTH MEDFORD 5, GRANTS PASS 3: South Medford swept the singles matches to fend off Grants Pass for a Southwest Conference victory on the Panthers’ home court.

Josie North and Keana Settle helped decide the outcome at No. 4 doubles with a 7-5, 7-6, 7-3 triumph over Sarah Robinson and Annie Neville.

Boys Volleyball

ASHLAND 3, PHOENIX 0: At Ashland, Noah Hendrix helped set the tone for Ashland with smart play that led to 14 assists and four aces as the Grizzlies won in straight sets, 25-14, 25-18, 25-21.

Sebastian Hunter pounded down 14 kills to go with two blocks for Ashland, while John Bare provided 14 digs and Ethan Barnes had nine digs, four aces, three kills and one block.
