Lightning sparks 11-acre wildfire south of Yreka

The lightning-caused Springs Fire burns Saturday about 20 miles south of Yreka, California. The fire was reported about 8 p.m. Friday and was 85% contained as of Sunday morning, with aircraft and 30 firefighters working to fully contain it, according to the California Department of Forestry.

GAZELLE, California – Lightning sparked a wildfire Friday evening on a mountainside between Yreka and Mt. Shasta City, California, that burned about 11 acres of grass and brush, according to Cal Fire.

As of Sunday morning, the fire was 85% contained and numerous air tankers were assisting 30 firefighters on the ground. On Saturday, a firefighter was treated at a local hospital for an unspecified minor injury.

The fire, dubbed the Springs Fire, is visible from Interstate 5, about 3 miles away. It’s about 3 miles south of Gazelle and 20 miles south of Yreka.
