Stranded Medford hockey team seeks funds for safe return

Outside of Oregon, the Rogue Valley Royals — the United States Premier Hockey League team from Medford — are stranded and trying to find a solution to get back home.

After being eliminated from the Northwest divisional playoffs in Nevada over the weekend, the Royals began their long bus ride back to Oregon but faced an unfortunate delay with the team bus breaking down in between the towns of Elko and Winnemucca, Nevada.

The Royals sought shelter at a rest stop along the road and, with the help of a Nevada State Trooper and a local gold mining company supplying some vans, the Royals were transported back to Elko and were able to get some rooms at a hotel.

After an assessment by a local mechanic, the bus has been deemed beyond repair and has left the team of 31 athletes along with their coaches stranded and looking for a new way to get back to Oregon.

The loss of the bus has caused unexpected expenses and, with the stress of ordeal, the Royals are looking to the community for financial help.

In an effort to fix the situation, a GoFundMe fundraiser has been started with a goal to raise $10,000 to bring the Royals home from Nevada.

All donations will be used to not only return the players, coaches and hockey equipment to Medford but also go toward the purchase of a new bus for next season.
