‘Something to the table’: Lynx Family Band brings rock ’n’ roll to the Rogue Valley (copy)

New to the Rogue Valley music scene, the Lynx Family Band is just getting started with their indie rock melodies reverberating around many a stage in Southern Oregon.

A family band consisting of father Cleo Lynx and children Dream Lynx, Love Lynx, Odin Lynx and Eve Lynx — with mother Mayple Lynx managing and booking shows — the outfit melds laid back grooves with classic rock roots.

While each of the family members cherished playing and writing music for each other and themselves, the idea to combine forces didn’t come until a one-off Mother’s Day song in 2018, then a worldwide pandemic that brought them together again under one roof.

“We didn’t really collaborate a whole lot, and then we did a Mother’s Day recording in 2018 up in Eugene … I think that was the first kind of collaboration where everyone brought something to the table,” said Cleo Lynx, vocalist, guitarist and bassist for the band.

When Dream Lynx and Love Lynx returned to the family’s home in the Rogue Valley from Eugene, the Lynx Family Band changed from a one-time collaboration to an all-the-time band.

“A couple of the older kids, Dream and Love, were living in Eugene and they moved back home and everyone was in their own room with the door shut playing their own music, and then we just decided maybe we should open our doors up and support each other in our songwriting and create a rock ’n’ roll band,” Cleo Lynx said.

“They sounded really good and I thought, ‘Well heck, I’m going to start trying to book you guys some shows,’ and it’s just really blown up from there,” said Mayple Lynx, “mom-ager” of the band.

Since then, the Lynx Family Band — also known simply as The Lynx — has been gigging around, hitting stages from Ashland to Brookings to Corvallis.

The group released “The Lynx” in 2021 and their latest record, “Cookie Jar,” in 2023.

The creatives count many musicians and bands as influences, from contemporary groups to old-school rock acts.

“As far as influences go, I feel like we all collectively together listen to a lot of Wilco, Mazzy Star, Cage The Elephant …. But then all the good oldies and stuff too, a lot of John Prine going around, Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, all the people,” said Dream Lynx, vocalist, guitarist and Mandobird player.

The musicians bring collaborative energy to each track, with one of the band members typically providing some verses and some chords for their fellow players to build off of.

“I really like making melodic patterns that fit with the vocal melody of the song, and so I try and latch on to that immediately and build off of the vocal melody of the song a lot of the time,” said Odin Lynx, vocalist and lead guitarist.

“We all share the spotlight a little bit when it comes to the roles in the band,” Dream Lynx said.

Like any family, or any band for that matter, the Lynx’s deal with disagreements from time to time, but strong familial ties and a shared vision keep them rooted.

“That’s the nice thing about a family band, even though rehearsals can be a little spicy we all know at the same time we can suck it up and move on,” Dream Lynx said. “Nothing ever lasts long.”

The band members have ambitious dreams of playing for bigger and bigger crowds as their sound continues to evolve.

“I just want to play on big stages and big festivals; I want to play in front of a bunch of people,” said Eve Lynx, vocalist, bassist and guitarist.

“I want to travel around the world playing shows and not have to worry about how much money I’ve got, that would be pretty awesome,” said Love Lynx, drummer for the band.

For the time being, the Rogue Valley rockers aim to continue building their chops and playing shows.

“We have a lot of material to record and I think we’re taking this opportunity with this big string of shows to get tighter and more relaxed at the same time,” Cleo Lynx said. “I think the arc is to play these shows and do a lot of demo work at home, and maybe late summer or fall pop into the studio and be ready to pump out another album.”

For folks looking to catch the Lynx Family Band live, the outfit has multiple shows lined up until September.

The band plays from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, March 29, at Bella Union Restaurant in Jacksonville; 6 to 8 p.m. April 5 at Gypsy Road

“To me, the greatest part about this whole thing is that I get to go and share my beautiful family and the music that they create and dance my ass off,” Mayple Lynx said. “I’m just such a proud mom.”
