PREPS: Crater girls off and running with runaway victory

Four players scored in double figures and Crater’s girls basketball team got off to a strong start Thursday as the Comets vie to return to the Class 5A state championship game.

Crater poured in 35 points in the first quarter alone en route to an easy 87-20 triumph at the Central Oregon Tip-Off Classic in Prineville.

Sage Winslow scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in the first half for the Comets (1-0), while South Medford transfer Taylor Young tacked on 14 of her 15 points in an opening half that saw Crater go up 58-11 by the break.

Winslow also finished with seven steals, six assists and four rebounds, while Young had eight steals, four assists and two rebounds.

Alexa Gugliotta added 13 points and six steals and Lydia Traore had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Comets, who saw Jazmine Fernandez, Haley Plankenhorn and Cameron Yohner each knock down a pair of 3-pointers.

Fernandez also had four assists and three boards, and Plankenhorn pulled in five boards.

After taking over for Scott Dippel, head coach Amber Lease recorded her first win for Crater, which was the 5A state runner-up a year ago.

WESTSIDE CHRISTIAN 35, ST. MARY’S 26: At Tigard, Bailey Strickler contributed 11 points and eight rebounds for St. Mary’s, which trailed by 14 late before making a fourth-quarter run in the Westside Winter Jam

Avery Gunn finished with eight points and Ella Yeamans chipped in with five rebounds for the Crusaders (0-1).

Boys Basketball

PHOENIX 65, NORTH VALLEY 30: At Merlin, Phoenix seniors Tobias Akpan and Lucas Wihtol dominated in the paint to lead the Pirates to a season-opening rout.

Akpan generated 15 of his 19 points in the first half and Wihtol, who transferred in from North Medford, recorded nine points in each half to finish with 18 points to get Phoenix (1-0) off to a strong start.

Clay Brazier scored eight points and North Valley got seven apiece from Dane Kissel and Max Freedman.

Boys Wrestling

EAGLE POINT 61, NORTH MEDFORD 16: Eagle Point claimed all but three matches in a runaway season-opening win at North Medford High.

The Eagles collected seven pins from Jaxon DeVette, Wyatt Dahling, Brett Jermain, Nathan Mallari, Sean McFall, Ethan Metcalf and Cash Nekouie, with technical falls secured by Thomas Wippel and Gavin Pogue.

Jordan Delacruz scored the lone close match of the night, edging North Medford’s Alexander Giovanelli with a 4-2 decision at heavyweight.

Samuel Hesler and Joseph Borraggine claimed the lone mat wins for the Black Tornado, with Max Barnard winning by forfeit.
