- North Medford's Olivia Boger looks for a lane to the basket against South Eugene during the first quarter in Medford Friday evening.
One night after barely missing an opportunity, North Medford’s girls basketball team was able to generate the first head coaching victory for Tiani Tunoa behind a splendid fourth-quarter comeback for a 47-40 win over Summit on Day 2 of the Luke Roth Invitational in Eugene.

Coming off a 52-49 loss to West Albany that saw the Black Tornado get passed over in the final frame, they were totally on target against the Storm with a game-best 18-point quarter to pull the rug out from under Summit.
The Storm had led 33-29 entering the fourth quarter Saturday.
“I think they just really started to kind of commit to one another on defense and trust each other,” said Tunoa of the comeback effort. “They started to settle down and make more sound decisions and they just played with a lot more poise and under control in the fourth quarter, and I think that allowed the game to slow down for them and help us regain momentum.”

Olivia Boger scored eight of her team-best 17 points in the final frame and fellow senior Sophia West had six of her 11 points in the fourth to spur the rally over Summit (2-1).
Boger also finished with four rebounds, while West had seven rebounds and three steals.
“It all started on the defensive end,” said Tunoa, whose team had nine steals and forced 17 turnovers.
Caileigh Raines, another senior, contributed nine points, 12 rebounds, three blocks, three assists and two steals in a solid all-around effort for North Medford (1-1), while senior Mariah Lane scored eight points to create some offensive balance.
The result was exactly what Tunoa — formerly Tiani Bradford — believed would be possible when she accepted her first head coaching role after serving as an assistant coach to Tom Cole at South Medford following her playing/coaching days at Southern Oregon University.
“I think it helps that we have a lot of senior leadership on this team and a lot of veteran experience at the varsity level,” she said. “With the changes we have implemented offensively and defensively, I think them being older and experienced has helped them be able to grasp those changes.
“It just had me excited and confident with the group that I was inheriting that — rather than this being one of those building years — I think we can start now with kind of being more competitive than we have in years past.”
As for achieving the first win in her coaching career, Tunoa hadn’t let it fully sink in even an hour after the game.
“If I’m honest, it doesn’t fully feel real yet but I know I’m super proud of the girls,” she said. “They are really buying into a lot of the changes with the system that’s being played. I think they’re slowly starting to see it pay off and I’m just really proud of them. I don’t get the wins without them.”
Kalyn Crist provided 13 points and seven rebounds and Rou Coates-Flaherty added six points and six rebounds to lead Summit.
