Firefighter Spencer Tejedas, pictured with his wife and two children, was burned in a house fire in Gresham on May 30.

A one-time Southern Oregon wildland firefighter will be the focus of a fundraising event at Legend Cider Co. in Talent from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Gresham firefighter Spencer Tejedas sustained burns over 45% of his body in a house fire on May 30 near Portland.

Tejedas and two other firefighters were injured after entering a burning house to search for children they believed were trapped inside. Finding none, they were exiting the burning structure when the fire flashed over, igniting the smoke around them, according to a GoFundMe page for Tejedas.

All three firefighters were injured, although Tejedas’ injuries were the most severe. His uniform melted to his body, causing severe injury to his arms, hands, neck, back and legs.

Tejedas is being treated at the Oregon Burn Center at Legacy Emmanuel and has been in a medically induced coma for over 30 days.

Legend Cider Co. owners Adrianne and Tyler Baumann are longtime friends of Tejedas and his wife, Melia. Adrianne Baumann attended high school with Melia, and several of the same friend group attended Southern Oregon University together.

Adrienne Baumann said the family has deep local ties with the Tejedas family. Spencer Tejedas spent a number of years working as a wildland firefighter for the U.S Forest Service for the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest before the couple and their two young children moved to the Portland area.

“We all sort of became friends during our time in Ashland, so there’s this whole tribe of kids who went to school there, and we all just stayed connected,” she said.

“When something impacts one of us, we all try to come together.”

Baumann said the cider house, which is co-sponsoring the event with Strategy One Home Loans, would hold a large raffle offering everything from services and vacation getaways to products. Proceeds from cider sales also will go toward the Tejedas family.

Baumann said the community had turned out in droves to donate raffle prizes.

“It’s been really great. Black Bird is donating a BBQ grill. Someone who works with Melia donated a week at their condo in Hawaii. There are some really great prizes. … You name it, and it’s been donated,” Baumann said.

“It’s amazing the way the community is showing up to support this family.”

While a GoFundMe is set up for the family, which had raised over $200,000 by Friday, Baumann said she was hopeful that the support — emotionally and financially — would continue to come in.

“Spencer is gonna be living with the scars from this for the rest of his life. It’s just really heartbreaking,” she said. “The doctors are optimistic about his recovery, but nobody knows whether he’ll be able to return to work or not, and Melia is off work to take care of him.”

“We just wanna do everything we can to help.”

Baumann said she would post photos of the raffle prizes on the taproom Facebook page.

Community members or businesses wishing to donate raffle prizes can do so until noon on Saturday.

Items can be dropped off at the taproom at 245 W. Valley View Road in Talent.
