Poisson, Launder team to win Big Al’s doubles title

Competitors in the 49th annual Big Al's Tennis Tournament take to the courts at Hunter Park in Ashland this past weekend.

ASHLAND — Hannah Poisson of Central Point and Ashland’s Anna Launder went undefeated to claim their championship crown in the adult-only women’s doubles division Sunday to wrap up the 49th annual Big Al’s Tennis Tournament at Hunter Park.

The duo of Poisson and Launder went 3-0 in their matches, sporting a 6-1 sets record to lead the field in the three-day event at Hunter Park in Ashland.

Poisson and Launder secured the top spot by pinning the lone loss on Nicole Cotta and Cindy Toy of California, 6-4, 6-2.

In the adult-only men’s doubles division, Milo Smith of Central Point and Andrew Schleinitz of Azalea earned the title after going undefeated in four matches, winning eight out of nine sets overall.

The deciding match for Smith and Schleinitz came during a victory over runners-up Hunter Holdermann and James Holdermann, who went 3-1 in the tourney. Smith and Schleinitz won the pivotal match in a tiebreaker, 7-5, 6-7, 10-6.

In the open Group 1 main singles draw, Lane Carruth from Cottonwood, California, scored a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Ashland’s John Dix to claim the championship.

Carruth also teamed with Uriah Harper of Bella Vista, California, to claim the open Group 1 main doubles championship, besting Medford’s Kevin Carrigan and Matthew Cleveland in Sunday’s championship finals, 6-4, 6-3.
