UPDATE: JCSO takes over investigation into officer-involved shooting at Hawthorne Park

Update: 12:40 p.m.: The Medford Police Department said the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office will conduct the investigation into an officer-involved shooting at Hawthorne Park on Friday morning.
A suspect was hit by gunfire and was taken to a local hospital. No officers were injured, according to MPD officials.
“Jackson County Sheriff Oregon has assumed the investigation into the officer-involved shooting that occurred earlier today at Hawthorne Park. It is standard protocol for an outside agency to lead investigations of this nature,” an afternoon MPD Facebook update said. “All future updates and information will be provided by their office. We appreciate the public’s continued patience and cooperation.”

Medford police say a person is in the hospital after police opened fire on a suspect Friday morning at Hawthorne Park.
“We’re responding to an officer-involved shooting at Hawthorne Park,” a Medford Police Department Facebook post said at 9 a.m.. “The involved officers are uninjured, and the suspect has been transported to the hospital.”
“There is a significant law enforcement presence in the area. Please avoid the park while officers continue their work on scene,” the post said. “We will provide more information as it becomes available.”
