- Phoenix's Ethan Dobbins makes a leap in the boys long jump, earning a personal record, during the Phoenix Icebreaker track and field meet at Phoenix High School Wednesday.
PHOENIX — Personal records were seemingly everywhere to be found Wednesday afternoon, which was precisely the hope of organizers of the Phoenix Icebreaker track and field meet.
What may not have been figured was exactly how close the competition would be as Cascade Christian, St. Mary’s, Elmira and Phoenix gathered at Jack Woodward Stadium.
Buoyed by a sweep in the hurdles races by senior Jackson Selden, Phoenix was able to edge Elmira by 2.5 points in the boys team competition.
On the girls side, Elmira was able to edge Cascade Christian for the title by a half-point (49-48.5) despite a pair of individual wins by the Challengers’ Autumn Murray in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump.
Murray crossed the finish line in 17.2 seconds to win the 100 hurdles and leaped 17 feet, 3.75 inches to claim the long jump.
Selden won the 110 hurdles in 18.1 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 46.1 seconds to finish as one of four double-event winners Wednesday in the boys competition.
St. Mary’s senior Jaden Foster set a PR in winning the 200 (23.9) and also cruised to a win in the 100 (11.5), while Elmira had a pair of double champions in Jacob Janeczko (shot put, discus) and Tanner Hunt (high jump, long jump).
St. Mary’s junior Indiana Olson posted a PR in winning the 400 (54.2), while Cascade Christian sophomore Tayen Landers did likewise in the 1,500 (4:44.8) and Phoenix junior Kael Feeley reached a PR in the 3,000 (10:10.4).
Six of the girls champions set PRs, including St. Mary’s freshman Sophia Bendaw (100, 13.8), Cascade Christian junior Brook Akins (400 1:14.1),
St. Mary’s senior Saniyah Ayala (3,000, 11:42.6), Phoenix senior Alex Prescott (high jump, 4-8) and St. Mary’s junior Emma Johnston (triple jump, 34-0.5).
Despite still being a little cautious in her recovery from an ankle injury, Phoenix senior Kyla Potratz won the 1,500 in 5:15.9 to help highlight the Pirates’ effort.
