Vines & Tines: Breakfast at Memo’s Kitchen is a no nonsense no-brainer

A basic breakfast at Memo's Kitchen of eggs over easy, bacon, homefries and a side of salsa.

My wife wanted her usual, a basic breakfast of eggs over easy with homefries and bacon. She likes to flip the eggs onto the potatoes and let the yolks soak in.

I wanted a breakfast burrito, or an omelet, maybe huevos rancheros — I’d decide later. And a bottomless cup of coffee. And we needed it to be fairly fast, because we were heading out for a hike and we wanted to hit the trail before it got too hot.

That list of wants took us to Memo’s Kitchen, 1124 Court St., in Medford.

Memo’s is a no-nonsense eatery in an industrial part of town, about two blocks off West McAndrews Road. It doesn’t have fancy decor, with red paneling in part of the dining room and brown paneling in another.

But what Memo’s does have is an excellent breakfast menu featuring Mexican and American fare, and some of the best service — and servers — of any restaurant around. If you drink coffee, you are unlikely to ever see the bottom of your cup, because the servers are constantly asking whether you want it topped off. Likewise, your water glass will stay full.

On our latest trip, I eyed the breakfast burrito, which features two scrambled eggs with onions, bacon and cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla and topped with sour cream, served with hash browns and a side of salsa. I also thought about the breakfast tacos, which feature three soft tacos stuffed with ham, scrambled eggs and cheese; served with hash browns and a side of salsa.

Then I nearly went with the Chile Relleno Omelet when a guy marched in, sat at the table next to us and ordered it without even consulting the menu. I admired his decisiveness.

“He must know something,” I thought.

Well, I know something too. We’ve eaten at Memo’s Kitchen at least 50 times since owner Guillermo Sanchez started the restaurant 10 years ago.

“I’ll go with the Burrito Ahogado,” I told our server. It’s a breakfast burrito stuffed with eggs and your choice of two ingredients, and covered with red or green sauce; served with rice and refried beans. I chose the green sauce, and my two ingredients were chorizo and avocado.

While we waited for the food to come, we reflected on how many times we’d eaten at Memo’s. There’s no shortage of breakfast spots in Medford, Central Point, Ashland and elsewhere in the Rogue Valley. Many of them are excellent, and we visit as many as we can. But we keep finding our way to Memo’s because we really enjoy the people who work there and the excellent food.

Just so you know, Memo’s is open for lunch too, though we’ve only eaten breakfast there. It’s open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week.

Our friends with kids tell us they like the kids menu. On our last trip we saw a dad with a table full of young ones chowing down on plates of giant pancakes, eggs and bacon. The menu also offers waffles, crepes and French toast.
