Water samples at Hart-Tish boat ramp and beach came back clean for E. coli, the Forest Service reported Thursday.

The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest has lifted a water advisory issued July 18 for Applegate Lake after new tests gave the lake a clean bill of health.

Water samples taken July 18 were substantially below the state standard for E. coli bacteria. The samples — taken by the Forest Service and tested by a local lab — produced results that measured Hart-Tish beach at 7.0 mpn and Hart Tish boat ramp at 5.0 mpn, according to a news release from the Forest Service Thursday morning.

The state water quality standard is 406 mpn for a single sample.

An E. coli scare at the lake followed a report that some swimmers at the lake may have gotten sick.

The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest — the agency responsible for Applegate Lake — advised caution and stated it would test the water. The results released Thursday followed those tests.

The single sample that produced the higher results is suspected to have been contaminated, possibly from waterfowl present in the area, the Forest Service said.
