Sixth-ranked Challengers open 38-0 lead to throttle past Rogue River in regular-season finale
When your school’s opposite basketball team is a three-time reigning state champion, sometimes it’s hard not to live a little bit in the shadows.
Cascade Christian’s girls basketball team stepped to the forefront Thursday night, however, earning a historic 21st victory this season with a 77-18 resounding effort over visiting Rogue River.
The sixth-ranked Challengers had already secured the Southern Oregon Conference regular-season title — their first since 2012 — but Thursday’s effort allowed them to surpass that 2011-12 team’s record for overall wins (20-10).
Cascade Christian (21-4) left little doubt in the outcome after racing out to a 31-0 lead through one quarter and scoring the first 38 points of the contest before Rogue River freshman Krissy Garwood finally broke her team’s scoring drought with a steal and layup in the second quarter.
All of this done, mind you, with Cascade’s leading scorer Izzy McCauley — who is averaging 20 points per game — unavailable against the Chieftains (3-20, 1-9).
Under the guidance of first-year head coach Monte Coley, Emma Coats and Angelica Arce supplied the driving force early for the Challengers with each scoring all 11 of their points in the first quarter.
Jordynn Jones added five points and Julia Brehm notched four points before all the starters — save for Grace McCauley — made their way to the bench for the final three quarters.
Reserve sophomore Brynn Coppedge wound up leading Cascade Christian in scoring with 13 points, with all 13 players who took the court for the Challengers registering at least one basket.
Grace McCauley pulled in 10 rebounds to go with four steals and four assists, while Coats and Mae Ferreira also had four assists apiece.
Ferreira added five steals as Cascade racked up 23 overall in its half-court defensive set to run its winning streak to 11 games entering postseason play.
Garwood led the young Rogue River squad with seven points in its season finale.
With a No. 4 seed currently in the Class 3A state power rankings, the Challengers expect to receive a home game in the state playoffs next Friday for the right to advance to the eight-team state tournament.
The 2011-12 Cascade Christian team, coached then by Marvin Denman, placed third at the 3A state tournament.
