Rogue Retreat renames thrift shop ‘Hopeful Secondhand,’ unveils upgrades

Rogue Retreat has changed the name of its thrift store to Hopeful Secondhand.

The rechristening comes as the social services nonprofit unveils recent improvements to the building at 1116 N. Riverside Ave., in Medford. The organization held a ribbon-cutting Thursday.

The nonprofit operates several residential and shelter programs with wraparound supports for homeless individuals in the area. Some programs have “Rogue Retreat” in the name, leading potential clients to stop by the store — until recently called Thrift Shop by Rogue Retreat — to seek services.

Sam Engel, the organization’s executive director, said a new name made sense.

“Mostly we didn’t want our guests or potential guests to get confused and spend time, energy, money, resources going across town to the wrong office,” he said. “We’d much rather folks came into our office — our main headquarters office there on 711 E. Main St. — so they can sign up for services.”

Over the past couple of months, the nonprofit has cleared out the store’s built-in cabinets, improved the flooring, upgraded the air conditioning and made other fixes. The store closed for a short time for repainting.

“It’s a much nicer space to shop in,” Engel said, “and we’re looking forward to showing off some of those changes to the community.”

Engel added: “It’s an older building. There’s always more work to do.”

The store — which has new displays, Engel said — mostly sells clothing, books, household goods, some electronics. One advantage of the remodel is that the store can accommodate more furniture, which tends to move pretty quickly.

Engel said in a text that his wife, Heidi Hill — a frequent shopper there — called the items “intentionally curated vintage merchandise.”

Revenue from the store supports Rogue Retreat’s other programs.
