A slow start to the season didn’t deter the Phoenix boys soccer team from reaching the Class 4A state championship match one year ago, and the Pirates aren’t going to worry about it this time around either.

Playing a tough preseason schedule again to test their limits, the Pirates finally got a chance to see what they can do against their Skyline Conference peers — and the outcome was worth the journey.

Phoenix enjoyed its most prolific scoring match of the season to open Skyline play Thursday, scoring three times in the first 18 minutes to take a 5-0 lead into halftime and cruise to a 6-0 triumph over Mazama in Klamath Falls.

Hector Ramos scored in the seventh and 13th minutes for the Pirates (2-4, 1-0 Sky) on assists by Dominic McGuire and Antonio Camargo, respectively.

McGuire then followed with three consecutive goals to put the Vikings away, scoring in the 18th, 28th and 32nd minutes.

In the 70th minute, Tanner Norris capped the scoring off an assist by Alex Garcia on a night when Phoenix outshot Mazama 12-2.

SUTHERLIN 5, ST. MARY’S 0: At Sutherlin, St. Mary’s trailed only 1-0 at halftime after Sutherlin scored a goal in the 30th minute but the second half caught the Crusaders on their heels for the first time this season in the District 4 loss.

Sutherlin (4-2, 4-1 Dist. 4) scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half to seize control, then closed with goals in the 26th and 35th minutes to pin down St. Mary’s (5-1, 4-1).

BROOKINGS-HARBOR 3, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1: At Brookings, Emma Coats scored to tie the contest before halftime for Cascade Christian but the Challengers fell prey to a rally by Brookings-Harbor in the second half of the District 4 matchup.

It was 1-0 when Coats was able to run down a through ball from the center midfield and outpace the defense for a shot past a diving goalkeeper for the Challengers (1-3-1 Dist. 4).

In the second half, wind gusts played a factor after a high offering by the Bruins continued to sail into the corner of the net. A penalty kick 10 minutes later created the final margin of victory.

Aubrey Hess and Coats kept the pressure on and generated offensive opportunities but neither was able to cash in over the final 25 minutes.

Amelia Vanlandingham and Mae Ferreira led the defensive charge with Jordynn Jones and Maddie Winters playing well in the midfield.

WEST SALEM 49, GRANTS PASS 14: At Salem, Pete Amatoi’s 12-yard touchdown run in the first quarter tied the game at 7-all for Grants Pass after West Salem had opened the scoring with a 1-yard fumble return, but the Cavemen couldn’t build any momentum as the Titans then ticked off 42 straight points for the South/Central Football Conference win.

Weston Berg’s 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter snapped the drought for the Cavemen (1-3, 0-2 SCFC) but the damage had already been done.

Grants Pass was limited to 262 total yards of offense and turned the ball over four times.

Nathan Bassett completed 14 of 32 passes for 138 yards and two interceptions and ran six times for 63 yards but lost a fumble. Gage Blay carried 12 times for 43 yards, and Troy Osborne caught three passes for 62 yards.

Bruxton Leair led the GP defense with nine tackles against West Salem (1-3, 1-1).
