It was already on Nathan Chin’s radar that his ninth-ranked North Medford football team might be in for a challenge Friday night against Roseburg at Finlay Field.
Still, clinging to a slight 14-9 advantage as the game moved into the fourth quarter was a little unexpected between teams on the opposite end of the spectrum in the South/Central Football Conference standings.
Fortunately for the Black Tornado, they could do no wrong in the final quarter and Roseburg found the other side of that coin as North Medford capitalized on three costly errors by the Indians to pull away for a 30-9 triumph.
“I’m proud of our kids and the mentality to go get a tough win,” said Chin. “It’s always tough to play in Roseburg, and the kids found a way to get one.”
The host Indians (1-5, 0-4 SCFC) practically gifted the game to North Medford with three miscues in the final 12 minutes that led to 16 straight points by the Black Tornado (5-1, 4-0).
“They were tough,” Chin said of Roseburg. “They played hard and it was a good, solid group, but being able to capitalize on mistakes was huge.”
The fourth-quarter barrage started early on when Roseburg senior Cayden Eckel fumbled away a punt to give North Medford the ball on the Indians’ 20-yard line. Three plays later, Jeremiah Robbins ran 4 yards for his third touchdown of the night to make it 21-9.
On the ensuing possession, Roseburg was called for a penalty on the kickoff return and started at its own 14, only to have the first snap of the drive sail over the head of quarterback Owen Bentea and into the end zone, where Kaden Austin fell on the ball for the Indians as Cameron Nix and Connor Trinca closed in to secure a safety.
Roseburg was able to force another punt by North Medford after a defensive stand, but the first snap to Bentea slipped through his hands and was kicked away as he tried to recover and Trinca scooped it up for the Tornado.
On the next play from scrimmage, North quarterback Traeger Healy lofted a 10-yard pass to Nolan Kelly into the corner of the end zone to collect a 30-9 advantage and put the game away.
Robbins had a big night with his three TDs, also running in from 6 yards out in the first quarter and taking in a screen pass from Healy in the second quarter for a 25-yard TD reception.
“Jeremiah played well, really, on both sides of the football,” said Chin. “He caught one touchdown and ran in two, so he played tough for us on offense, and then, obviously, on the defensive side he played well as always.”
Robbins finished with 18 carries for 76 yards and two catches for 39 yards, while Healy completed 23 of 34 passes for 255 yards. Kelly proved to be the sophomore’s top target with seven catches for 83 yards after senior tight end A.J. Pugliano was lost for the game with a leg injury in a scary situation in the second quarter.
Pugliano raced across the field to try and make a downfield block for Healy as the QB pulled the ball down and scrambled left. As he neared Roseburg’s Brayton Loomis, Pugliano began to stumble and collided awkwardly into Loomis, who went down on the play as well and had to be removed from the field by stretcher and ambulance as a precautionary measure.
No update on the status of either player was available from Chin after the game.
“Obviously, A.J. is a big part of what we do offensively so we had to adjust,” said the coach. “They were doing a good job of taking stuff away from him anyway and so we still had to adjust already from that standpoint. We had to change some personnel groupings and get some different guys in there.”
