A Grants Pass man was indicted by a Jackson County grand jury Tuesday on a single count of attempted murder and two other charges following his arrest for his alleged role in a shooting outside Buffalo Wild Wings in north Medford late Friday.
Joseph Larry Lopez, 18, of Grants Pass, was charged with attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon and first-degree assault for allegedly trying to kill another man around 11:25 p.m. Friday in the vicinity of the restaurant in the 1700 block of Delta Waters Road.
Lopez pleaded not guilty on the information — the charging instrument that does not require a grand jury’s vote — according to Melissa LeRitz, the prosecutor handling the case. Following his indictment, Lopez was expected to be arraigned at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court before Judge Kelly Ravassipour.
Lopez remained lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $1 million bail as of Tuesday. If released, he would have to report to the Pretrial Release Assistance Office one day after release from jail. He also cannot possess any firearms, ammunition, other weapons or dangerous animals, and he must refrain from contacting the victim in his case.
Lopez was arrested Friday following what police believe was a confrontation between two groups of people in front of Buffalo Wild Wings, a Saturday morning release from the Medford Police Department said.
The shooting victim was taken to the hospital, where he has remained in “serious condition,” Medford police Lt. Geoff Kirkpatrick wrote in an email Monday.
Authorities responded to the scene after a Medford officer on routine patrol heard gunshots near the restaurant around 11:25 p.m.
The officer responded, found the victim on the ground next to the front door and immediately began medical aid, according to the release.
Police said several individuals were seen running to a nearby vehicle and fleeing the scene toward Highway 62. The vehicle’s description and direction were broadcast to other responding officers, who stopped the vehicle on Highway 62 near Bullock Road.
The occupants in the vehicle were questioned but “there are no other people charged at this time,” Kirkpatrick wrote Monday.
