PREB FB: Challengers cruise to 22nd straight win

MYRTLE CREEK — Caleb Scaglione powered the Cascade Christian football team early with three touchdowns and the Challengers never looked back Friday night against South Umpqua to win their 22nd consecutive game, 41-12, in the final week of Far West League play.

Scaglione had a 5-yard rushing touchdown along with a pair of TD receptions (23 and 17 yards). The sophomore running back recorded 67 rushing yards on 18 carries plus 38 receiving yards on three catches.

“He’s just a smart kid,” said Cascade Christian coach Jon Gettman. “He knows the routes and where to go and what he is put in to do.”

The Challengers (9-0 FWL) got a boost in the air with quarterback Ashton Moody and his five TD passes, totaling 339 yards on 24-for-38 passing. The senior battled through a calf bruise that has hampered his play over the past few weeks.

Receiver Luke Wilson hauled in 23- and a 9-yard touchdown receptions in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Wilson had five catches for 52 yards.

Cascade Christian was uncharacteristically out of sync in the first quarter, with four penalties for 45 yards on its first drive cutting into the Challengers’ rhythm.

“(South) Umpqua did a great job taking away what we wanted,” Gettman said. “It forced us to take a step back and adjust to what they were doing.”

Being undefeated for two years in FWL play isn’t as important to the Challengers as securing home field advantage in the Class 3A state playoffs.

“The big thing is being a home team in the playoffs,” said Gettman, whose team closed Friday with a No. 2 state power ranking. “We will obviously find out who we are facing soon, but the biggest thing is not going on the road to start.”

ROSEBURG 7, GRANTS PASS 3: At Grants Pass, four turnovers and 101 penalty yards held Grants Pass back in the South/Central Football Conference loss at Mel Ingram Field.

Tyler McIntosh gave the Cavemen (2-7, 1-6 SCFC) a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 39-yard field goal, but that was all the scoring GP could muster in the season-ender.

Running back Gage Blay paced the Cavemen with 127 rushing yards on 16 carries, while Connor Johnston hauled in three receptions for 25 yards after freshman QB Jordan Rossetta was held to 44 yards on 6-for-17 passing.

Roseburg (2-7, 1-6) slowed down freshman quarterback Jordan Rossetta to only 44 passing yards on six of 17 throws.

The Cavemen held a 182-178 edge in total yards over Roseburg (2-7, 1-6), which gained the advantage on a 15-yard TD pass from Owen Bentea to Kadin Austin in the second quarter.

The Cavemen earned the final playoff bid for the Columbia Cup and will play at Liberty on Friday.

SPRINGFIELD 42, EAGLE POINT 14: At Springfield, Eagle Point senior Bryton Livingston’s two rushing touchdowns were not enough to keep pace in the Midwestern League match for second place.

The Eagles (5-4, 5-2 MWL) were limited to only 97 yards of total offense, with Hugo Perezchica carrying the ball 10 times for 74 yards.

As the No. 14 seed in the 5A power rankings, Eagle Point will travel to Bend to take on No. 3 Mountain View next Friday to open the state playoffs.
