Early blitz carries North Medford to lopsided win

It only took one dominant quarter of basketball for the North Medford girls to secure a 52-19 Southwest Conference victory Friday night.

The Black Tornado (8-11, 4-3 SWC) used a 19-1 advantage in the first quarter to burst out to a commanding lead and then saw four players finish in double figures as North cruised to its most lopsided win of the season.

Mariah Lane knocked down two of North Medford’s three 3-pointers in the wide-open first quarter, and the Black Tornado went on to connect for a season-high 10 3-pointers after Sophia West had four and Lane went 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

“We kicked butt in that first quarter,” said Lane. “I think we deserved that win tonight, and the first quarter was very good.”

The junior guard has helped spread the floor the past few weeks with her long-range efforts, and her teammates were thankful for the open lanes her hot start created. That perimeter threat forced South Eugene (5-14, 1-6) to play a more high-pressure defense on Lane for the rest of the game.

“It added a lot of dimension to our game,” said Olivia Boger, who finished with 15 points. “It created scoring opportunities for other players.”

West took advantage of the extra space to spot up for 13 points and shot 4-of-10 from the 3-point line, and Caileigh Raines finished with 11 points and four blocks for North Medford.

With the offense running smoothly, the Black Tornado also held the Axe without a field goal in the first quarter. Lila June Cadaret managed to hit one free throw to prevent a scoreless eight minutes.

South Eugene had a frustrating night shooting to start, missing 11 shots thanks to steady pressure on the ball by North Medford.

“We came out in a press, which slowed them down,” said Boger. “Our defense was really good, we were flying, covering the outlets, so we didn’t give up many fastbreaks.”

Throughout the match, North Medford also kept full control of the ball as it hustled for 21 offensive rebounds. Those extra possessions gave the Tornado more time to operate, and simultaneously eliminated valuable time that South Eugene needed to get back into the game.

Armed with a roster that leans toward shooting from the outside, North Medford head coach JT Thomas was glad to see more of an emphasis on the long rebounds after a 3-point miss.

“We are trying to get more disciplined on where we are going after the shot,” said Thomas. “One of the things that we have been analyzing that we’ve not done a good job of on that side is overrunning the miss on a long shot.”

One of the players who took that to heart was Abigail Taylor, who had three offensive rebounds to help set the tone for the team.

“She set the bar high for our other rebounders and pushed us to be better,” Lane said about the 5-foot-5 guard.

Thomas added: “I thought she played it really well as I watched her get her hands on a lot of rebounds. She was just getting to that mid-range area and just reading where it was going.”

Olivia Harris had five offensive rebounds as she finished with a team-high 11 boards, while both Boger and Raines supplied four offensive rebounds each.
