PREP HOOPS: Crater crushes Ashland in MWL sweep

With a big showdown looming against top-ranked North Eugene, the Crater boys basketball team didn’t show a hint of lost focus Tuesday night in a 65-35 romp past Ashland in Central Point.

The host Comets carried a 17-10 lead into the second quarter, then took it up a notch in the second quarter with a 20-6 surge that essentially secured the Midwestern League triumph.

Ashton Acrey and Kyle Bittle dropped in 15 points apiece to propel Crater (16-4, 6-2 MWL), which will play host to the Highlanders (18-2, 8-0) on Friday night. Tipoff is 5:15 p.m.

Julien Grant chimed in with 12 points for the Comets, while Cody Dutkiewicz added 10 points.

Jojo Harrower generated 14 of the 16 first-half points scored by Ashland (5-14, 1-7), and finished with 18 points overall.

PHOENIX 59, MAZAMA 52: At Phoenix, Dylan Harper knocked down four 3-pointers to lead Phoenix in the Skyline Conference triumph.

Harper registered 20 points to lead the Pirates (14-5, 3-2 Skyline), while Amaru Williams added 15 points and Robin Trenbeath had 11 points.

Kai Hunt and Marcos Ulloa-Ford scored 16 points apiece for Mazama (4-14, 1-4), and Gabe Nanni produced 15 points.

SOUTH MEDFORD 65, ROSEBURG 14: At Roseburg, second-ranked South Medford put the squeeze on Roseburg, allowing only three first-half free throws to build a 35-3 cushion in the Southwest Conference rout.

Senior forward Kim Ceron-Romero paved the way with 22 points, five rebounds, four steals and four assists for the Panthers (17-3, 8-0 SWC), while Sara Schmerbach added another strong all-around effort with 12 points, six steals, six rebounds and five assists.

Taylor Young knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 18 points against Roseburg (2-17, 0-7), which managed four field goals overall.

GRANTS PASS 63, NORTH MEDFORD 25: At Grants Pass, North Medford found bad-timing with illness running through the team and a dominant Grants Pass effort that likely clinched third place in the SWC standings for the Cavers.

Olivia Boger tallied 10 points and Caileigh Raines finished with seven points for the Black Tornado (8-12, 4-4 SWC), who were held scoreless in the first quarter and never recovered from the 19-point deficit.

Brooklyn Wakefield drained five of the 11 3-pointers by Grants Pass (12-8, 5-3) and finished with 17 points to lead three Cavers in double figures. Kenzie Kleiner had 13 points and Brooke Anderson added 12.

CRATER 95, ASHLAND 8: At Central Point, Crater junior Addison Dippel connected on four 3-pointers and poured in 24 points to complement 25 points from sophomore Sage Winslow as the top-ranked Comets lived up to their billing in the Midwestern League win.

Lydia Traore chimed in with 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for Crater (18-1, 8-0 MWL), which limited Ashland to four field goals overall and led 26-2 after one quarter.

Winslow also had seven steals, four assists and four rebounds, and Dippel also had seven steals.

Alexa Gugliotta, Addison Vranes and Abby Winslow each came up with six steals for the Comets, with the elder Winslow adding eight points, six rebounds and five assists. Chase Weaver pulled in six boards to go with three blocks.

Anna Berry scored four points for Ashland (2-17, 0-8).

PHOENIX 48, MAZAMA 34: At Phoenix, Mae Woodward and Anabell Delgado combined for 13 of Phoenix’s 21 fourth-quarter points to earn the Skyline Conference victory.

Delgado finished with 17 points and seven steals for the Pirates (12-8, 3-2 Skyline), and Woodward contributed 15 points and nine rebounds.

Lilliana Quintero added eight points and four steals for Phoenix.

Leah Hernandez finished with 10 points for Mazama (1-17, 0-5).
