Oregon counties will get a combined $47.7 million Secure Rural Schools funding for schools, roads and other municipal services — including roughly $1.4 million for Jackson County.

The federal funds cover schools, road maintenance, youth job training, wildfire prevention measures and habitat restoration, and are administered through the U.S. Forest Service from the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden’s office.

More than $232 million in Secure Rural Schools funding was issued across the country. Oregon is receiving the highest amount at $47.7 million. California is the second-highest recipient with $33.7 million, followed by $21.5 million for Idaho and $15.1 million for Washington state.

Jackson County is getting $1,462,463.10 and Josephine County is getting $950,157.29, according to numbers provided by Wyden’s office. Top Oregon recipients by county include Lane at $7.7 million, Douglas at $6.6 million and Klamath at $6.3 million.

Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, co-authored the original Secure Rural Schools law in 2000, and in 2021 secured three additional years of SRS funding as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
