EUGENE — Indiana Olson provided the main highlight with his efforts in the sprints for the St. Mary’s boys track and field team during the prelims on the first day of the Class 3A state championships on Thursday afternoon.

Olson qualified in the boys 200-meter race and the 400 to take a full load of four events into Friday’s second day at Hayward Field, along with competing in both team relays for the Crusaders.

The senior ran 50.55 seconds for the second-best time in the 200 and placed fourth in the 200 with a time of 22.89.

After winning male athlete of the meet at the 3A District 5 championships, any accomplishments at the state championships will be gravy for Olson.

“I think state is just kind of a bonus of everything,” Olson said. “It’s an awesome opportunity to be able to come here and run at Hayward because winning (the district honor) does give me some confidence.”

St. Mary’s track and field coach Joe Volk is excited to see what the sprinter can do on Day 2, especially after last year was his first year competing in the sport.

“Indiana had a great first day,” said Volk. “Now running against even better competition after districts, I think it brings out the best in him. He’s relatively new to track, so it’s neat to see him gaining success at this level.”

Andrew Lockwood also qualified in the 200 (23.00) to take the eighth and final spot in the event final.

The senior will also compete in both relays, and Olson said he is excited at the prospect of racing with and against his teammate.

“Last time I was at state I didn’t get to do any open events with my buddies,” Olson said about racing with Lockwood. “It’s really cool to see my other teammates be able to compete here and do really well.”

While Lockwood and Olson enjoyed solid days, the Crusader girls missed two chances to make the podium.

Bella Fortino wasn’t at her best after coming down with migraines and running a fever the night before her 3,000 final.

Even with the illness, however, Fortino did not want to miss her lone event at state and wound up placing 10th (12:21.02).

“I’m glad that I got to experience it, even though it wasn’t what we wanted today. It was still pretty good,” said Fortino. “I didn’t really care about time or place, but I wanted to finish this at Hayward.”

Emma Johnston also placed 10th in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 6 inches on her second attempt.

After Johnston missed the finals, Volk said that will only motivate her on Day 2 in the triple jump, where she has the best mark in the field of 17 athletes.

“She’s definitely motivated to put today behind her and get after it tomorrow,” Volk said about Johnston’s mindset. “She is a competitor and she’s gonna go out and do her best tomorrow.”

Cascade Christian also struggled in the prelims to close Day 1, with Isaac Young missing the finals in the boys 800 after placing ninth (2:05.53).

Morgan Samhammer was also unable to reach the finals in the girls 200 (27.75) for the Challengers, while St. Mary’s sprinter Sophia Bendaw also came up shy in the 100 (13.14).
