6A/4A TRACK: South Medford’s Scott vaults to silver medal

EUGENE — Day 1 of the Class 6A track and field state championships probably didn’t have the ideal start for South Medford’s Devon Scott on Friday afternoon at Hayward Field.

With a week’s worth of preparation, Scott got himself into the right mindset to have a solid day in the pole vault. However, that was thrown for a loop as his two tall poles did not pass inspection after it was deemed that he didn’t have the right tape at the top.

Despite the setback, the junior reached a personal-best 14 feet, 1.75 inches to take second in the championships a year after he placed 10th (12-11.75) in his first trip to state.

Scott started the competition hot by taking the driver’s seat and cleared his first four heights to get himself among the finalists.

“I realized there’s only four people left,” said Scott. “I was like, hold up, because I’ve cleared all these on almost all my tries and these people haven’t been. It gave me a confidence boost and pushed me through.”

Fighting to that point was something that Panthers pole vault coach Hayden Powell was excited to see, especially when Scott was vaulting without his tallest poles.

“We’ve been working really hard all week to try and get them up to those poles,” said Powell. “But Devon came out and showed his true colors and showed who he is. I’m really glad that he did that and really proud of his performance.”

Even though David Douglas’ Troy Hockett won the pole vault with a height of 15-0, Scott was happy with how he competed and exceeded his own expectations.

“I thought I was gonna get fourth,” he said, “but it came out of the blue. I just kept getting over these heights and sending it. It just feels amazing to have finished like this.”

Cade Siewert also placed seventh (42-6.75) in the triple jump to highlight the day for the Panthers.

Southwest Conference boys discus champion Makani Manuwai did not advance to the finals after fouling on each of his attempts Friday.

North Medford also produced a solid Day 1, with Connor Trinca throwing a personal best in the shot put (51-0.75) to claim fourth place, while Heston Likens recorded a PR in the pole vault to place seventh (13-2.5).

In the 6A girls meet, Paije Carpenter placed fifth in the javelin (51-0.75) and the triple jump (36-10.25) for the Black Tornado.

Olivia Boger finished 13th in the triple jump at 33-2.5.

At the Class 4A state championships, Kael Feeley recorded a personal best to place third (8:52.92) in the boys 3,000 for Phoenix, while teammate Cash Stallsworth was 10th in the discus (128-11) and 13th in the shot put (42-3.25).

Pirates freshman Aleah Polansky also ran a personal-best 12:09.49 in the girls 3,000.
