Davis Jones converts rare 50-yard field goal for St. Mary’s

St. Mary’s football coach Jamie Young dubbed Davis Jones the “bright spot” after Thursday night’s 39-3 loss at Lakeview, and he couldn’t have been more accurate.

Jones connected on a school-record 50-yard field goal during the third quarter for the lone points for St. Mary’s in the Southern Oregon Conference opener for both teams.

The record-setting buzz was felt throughout the stadium, but those on hand were largely unaware at the time of the magnitude of what they had witnessed.

Jones, who has turned his focus from soccer to football in his senior year, converted only the 19th field goal of at least 50 yards in Oregon high school history. He is one of only four players at the smaller school level (Class 3A and under) to reach the 50-yard mark.

Current Baltimore Orioles star catcher Adley Rutschman holds the state record after the left-footer connected on a wind-aided 63-yard field goal for Sherwood on Nov. 13, 2015, in a 41-20 playoff victory over Tigard. The 63-yarder broke a 24-year-old Oregon record at the time that was set by Paul Burton of Sunset, who had a 55-yarder in 1991.

Vernonia’s Buster Hodges holds the small-school mark — third overall — after connecting on a 54-yard field goal against Rainier in 1926. Aaron Streblow of Banks stands fourth after converting a 53-yarder in 2012 against La Salle.

The Crusaders dropped to 0-5 overall, while Lakeview moved to 2-3.
