Civil Rights Lecture: Law professor and civil rights theorist Ian Haney Lopez will present “Building a Broader ‘We’: Fusing Race and Class,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, in the Rogue River Room of Southern Oregon University’s Stevenson Union, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. The lecture will center on the question of how we can make the transition from a multi-racial population to a multi-racial democracy — one that is “genuinely racially egalitarian.” Haney Lopez will challenge audience members to examine their understanding of racism, and will discuss a model of racism that blends race and class to show the value of embracing a multi-racial society. Southern Oregon Photographic Association: The local camera club meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of each month in Lidgate Hall at Medford United Church of Christ, 1801 E. Mapping Oregon Butterflies: Jeffery C. Miller, entomologist and Oregon State University emeritus professor, will present “Mapping Oregon Butterflies & Their Caterpillar Foodplants,” at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Rogue Valley YMCA (previously Living Waters Church), 2200 Roberts Road, Medford.
