Crater Lake National Park and the Oregon Caves National Monument & Preserve are buttoning things up for the winter.

At Crater Lake, the Steel Information Center is open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. except Dec. 25. No gasoline is available at the park due to a major repair project. The park’s north entrance and Rim Drive are closed until spring due to heavy snowfall. For more information, go to nps.gov/crla or call 541-594-3000.

Open house set for Mt. Ashland Explorer Post

Mt. Ashland Ski Area is hosting an open house for its new Explorer Post at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Talent Library, 101 Home St. The post is for students 16-20 years old who are interested in careers in the ski or outdoor industry. Members will learn about operations, guest services, marketing and other aspects of the industry.

Watershed council hosts tour of Bear Creek work project

The Rogue River Watershed Council invites the public to tour a completed restoration work project along Bear Creek near Lynn Newbry Park in Talent 9-10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Meet near the shelter area at the park, located off of Siskiyou View south of West Valley View Road.

The work, known as the Bear Creek River Mile 19.0 restoration project, was undertaken in the wake of the 2020 Almeda Fire. The project included excavation and the placement of large wood structures, with the goal of improving fire-damaged floodplain, secondary channels, flood capacity, water quality and riparian forests.

Recycle tires Saturday in Cave Junction

People may recycle up to 10 vehicle tires each from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday or until trailers are full at the Oregon Caves Chevron, located at the Redwood and Caves highways in Cave Junction.

Partners in the project include the Josephine County Solid Waste Agency, the Cave Junction Farmers’ Market, The Motherline and Chevron. No dump truck, semi or tractor tires allowed and no split rims. For more information, call 541-294-0260.

Siskiyou Field Institute offers mushroom classes, outings

The Siskiyou Field Institute, 1241 Illinois River Road, Selma, is hosting a class about mushrooms of the Siskiyou Mountains, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $80. Register at thesfi.org. Call 541-597-8530 for more information.

Participants will learn how to identify and harvest local mushrooms. The class involves hiking over uneven terrain. Ages 12 and older are welcome.

The institute also is hosting two days of talks and field trips to learn about truffles of the Siskiyou Mountains, on Nov. 16 and 17, for people 16 and older. Cost is $140.

Learn about, count local birds in Ashland

Learn about local birds and help count them as they visit feeders at Ashland’s North Mountain Park on alternate Saturdays beginning this Saturday and continuing through March 15, from 9-10 a.m. The information collected will be submitted to Cornell University’s FeederWatch project.

Climate group hosts annual fundraiser

Southern Oregon Climate Action Now is hosting a “Sips For Sustainability” fundraiser from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 16 at Belleview Grange, 1050 Tolman Creek Road in Ashland. The event is the organization’s annual fundraiser and will include appetizers, live music and conversation.

Mount Shasta center offers nature writing workshop

The Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center is hosting a free “writing nature workshop” from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Medicine Lake Highlands. A focus will be on writing to heal relations with Earth. Information will be provided about protecting the highlands and a possible national monument designation.

Cyclocross series continues Saturday in Jacksonville

The 26th annual Southern Oregon Outlaw Cyclocross bicycle race series benefitting Josephine County Search and Rescue is set for its third round from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Bigham Knoll, 525 Bigham Knoll Drive in Jacksonville.

Beginner/intermediate races start at 1 p.m. while advanced and expert races start at 2 p.m. Cyclocross is a cross between road and mountain biking, with races run on a short course containing obstacles.

The series, held in memory of Nicholas J. Jensen, continues on Saturdays through Nov. 16 at, Valley of the Rogue State Park near Rogue River and on Nov. 23 at Tom Pearce Park near Grants Pass. A recent leg of the event on Mount Ashland was canceled because of weather.

Take a hike with Medford Parks and Rec

People 55 and older are invited to take a hike with Medford Parks and Recreation on Nov. 12 to East Applegate Ridge, Nov. 19 to Cathedral Hills or Nov. 26 to Roxy Ann Peak. Other hikes are set for Dec. 3 to Ti’Lomikh Falls and Dec. 10 to Cantrall Creek.

Meet at Rogue X, 901 Rossanley Drive in Medford, on the day of the event and take a van to the trail. Cost is $18 for Medford residents and $24 for non-residents. Register early, as space is limited.
