Palmer sets Phoenix school record in boys javelin to highlight Skyline Conference championships
Crater swept the boys and girls tiles at the Midwestern League championships for the second year in a row, but it was the Eagle Point boys team that stole the show on Day 2 in Springfield on Saturday.
The Eagles won six of the 13 events contested after the meet picked up from Thursday, allowing Eagle Point to score its highest finish in the boys team standings in at least 15 years with a runner-up showing to the Comets.
For perspective on EP’s rise in 2025, the Eagles finished in last place in 2023 and 2022, totaling only 18.5 points in the latter. Saturday’s tally resulted in 136 points, well behind Crater’s winning mark of 184.5 points but still with a nice cushion over third-place Thurston (117.5).
Helping spur the strong finish for Eagle Point was senior Logan Moreno, who set a school record in winning the 100 meters in 10.76 seconds and swept the sprints with a win in 22.05 seconds in the 200.
In both races, Moreno topped teammates, with Easton Raber finishing second in the 100 (11.03) and Benjamin Leveque placing second in the 200 (22.47). Raber went on to win the pole vault at 14 feet, 6 inches, and Leveque won the high jump at 5-11.5.
Moreno, Leveque and Raber were joined by Kaden Webb to win the 4×100 relay in another school record performance at 42.20 seconds. That mark is the best at the Class 5A level this spring.
Senior Logan Brown won the boys discus title in 142-4, while the Eagles’ third-place showing in the 4×400 relay (3:29.83) was the second-fastest time in school history. Moreno and Raber were joined by Griffin Womack and Gage Hamann in the long relay.
The rest of the boys meet, however, was essentially status quo as Crater’s boys team earned its fourth straight title behind another pair of championship outings for senior Josiah Tostenson. The Washington-bound star won the 800 in 1:53.57, then finished an eyelash ahead of senior teammate Tayvon Kitchen in the 1,500. Tostenson crossed in 3:54.53 and Kitchen was right next to him at 3:54.59.
On the girls side, Crater junior Claire Davenport finished first in the 300 hurdles (47.44) of Ashland’s Wynn Pistole (48.35), and scored her second MWL title with a win in the high jump (5-4.25).
Reese Garnica placed first in the 1,500 (4:40.72) and the Comets claimed the 4×400 relay title (4:04.18) to help score 174 points to finish ahead of Thurston (167.5) in a tight battle.
Garnica was joined in the long relay by Haddie Barsalou, Brynn Davenport and Grace Havniear.
While it didn’t factor into state qualifying — the top two finishers in each event advance to the Class 5A state championships — Eagle Point sophomore Kyla Ford notched the second-fastest finish in the 800 in school history by placing sixth in 2:23.89.
