OUTDOOR ADVENTURES: Rogue River annual cleanup, hikes and more

- The Rogue River flows through Hellgate Canyon, one of the locations to be cleaned of trash during Saturday's annual Rogue River Cleanup. Volunteers should meet at 8 a.m. at the Hog Creek Boat Landing, 4719 Galice Road, for assignment, which could include weed pulling, trash pickup along roads and debris removal from along the river.
The annual Rogue River Cleanup is set for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday west of Merlin.
Participating organizations include government agencies, conservation organizations and businesses operating in Jackson and Josephine counties.
Ways to help include riverside cleanup, roadside cleanup and weed pulling. There’s also limited capacity to help with in-water cleanup using commercial rafts.
Volunteers should meet at the Hog Creek Boat Landing, 4719 Galice Road. An after-party is scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. at Indian Mary Park, 7100 Galice Road. Registration is suggested to guarantee a spot.

ScienceWorks hosts wildland fire event
ScienceWorks is hosting a Wildfire Education Day 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at its museum, 1500 E. Main St., Ashland. Museum admission is free for the day.
The event is presented by the Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collaborative.
Phoenix celebration set for Sunday
The Firebrand Resiliency Collective will host a rescheduled community event intended to welcome spring and encourage fire safety 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Phoenix Industrial Studios, 4495 S. Pacific Highway in Phoenix. Rainy, cold weather postponed the previously scheduled event.
The celebration will feature live music, food trucks, education booths and children’s activities. There will be arts and crafts, Smokey Bear, a fire engine and tree planting.
An organized 8-mile bicycle ride to the event via the Bear Creek Greenway is set for 11 a.m. from Ashland’s dog park on Briggs Lane.
Parking is available at Phoenix Elementary School, Umpqua Bank and Indigo Creek Outfitters in Phoenix, with a trolley arriving every 20 minutes to take visitors to the event site.

Safety fair is Saturday in Medford
The Jackson County Safety & Preparedness Fair is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Pear Blossom Park in downtown Medford. Activities include police dog, drone and vehicle extrication demonstrations, plus a fire extinguisher workshop and more.
Bike breakfast is Thursday in Ashland
An Ashland “bike breakfast” is set for 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday along the Central Ashland bike path at Railroad Park, courtesy of the Ashland Parks and Recreation Department.
Snacks, coffee and conversation can be had along with free bicycle safety checks, light bike tuning and safety gear provided.
Learn about Red Buttes Wilderness Area
Join the Siskiyou Mountain Club to learn about the Red Buttes Wilderness Area during a presentation set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the club’s facility, 33 Third St. in Ashland.
The club has two upcoming work crew opportunities, including one set for Sunday in the Babyfoot Lake area in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. The second work crew outing is an annual trek through the Kalmiopsis Wilderness May 23-27. To register, go to siskiyoumountainclub.org.
Tour Bear Creek restoration site
Join The Freshwater Trust for a field trip and tour of a creek restoration site from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday in Ashland.
The guided tour will leave from North Mountain Park Nature Center, 620 N. Mountain Ave., and take a short walk from the parking lot down to a streamside revegetation project along Bear Creek in Riverwalk Park.

The trust is an environmental nonprofit working in local rivers and streams on behalf of the city of Ashland.
Hike to tunnel dug by Chinese workers
Join the Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology for a guided history hike at the Buck Rock Tunnel on Saturday.
Meet at 9 a.m. at the Rite Aid parking lot at 2341 Ashland St. in Ashland to carpool to the site. The hike is moderately strenuous and about 4 miles round-trip.
SOU’s Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project has spent years investigating Buck Rock Tunnel, the original Oregon and California Railroad route through the Siskiyou Mountains. BLM and SOU archaeologists will provide updates on project findings, historical maps and artifacts.

Hike the Table Rocks
The BLM and The Nature Conservancy are offering free education hikes at Upper and Lower Table Rocks and led by specialists who can speak on flora, fauna, geology, culture and astronomy.

Upcoming hikes include a 9 a.m. Saturday outing at Upper Table Rock, with the focus on geology; a hike focusing on bugs at 9 a.m. Sunday at Lower Table Rock; and a hike at 10:30 p.m. June 1 at the Lower Table Rock loop trail to look for creatures of the night.
The hike to the top and back at Upper Table Rock is 2.5 miles, while the hike up and back at Lower Table Rock is 2.8 miles.
To get to Upper Table Rock from Interstate 5, take Exit 33 at Central Point, head east on East Pine Street for 1 mile, then turn north (left) on Table Rock Road. Drive 5.3 miles to Modoc Road and turn north (right). The trailhead is located another 1.5 miles on the left.
Take a walk in Grants Pass
Join the Rogue Valley Walkers on their next outing, set for 9 a.m. Saturday starting from the parking lot of the Lodge at Riverside, 955 S.E. Seventh St. in Grants Pass. The full route is 6.2 miles.

Hike Pompadour Bluff

Bird walk is Tuesday in Grants Pass
Fran Taylor with the Siskiyou Audubon Society will lead a bird walk at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday through Reinhart Volunteer Park in Grants Pass. Meet in the parking lot next to the pedestrian bridge. During inclement weather, call 541-291-0506 to verify the outing is happening.
Hike Eight Dollar Mountain
Explore the Eight Dollar Mountain Preserve near Selma on May 22 with hike leader Kristi Mergenthaler. Hikers will meet in the parking lot of Ray’s Market in Selma at 2 p.m. and will return by 4 or 4:30 p.m. Hiking will be along an old road bed with some rocky terrain.

Bird walk set for Bear Creek
Take a beginner’s bird walk along Bear Creek 9 to 11 a.m. May 25. Hikers will meet at the covered picnic pavilion at Lynn Newbry Park in Talent and walk about 0.6 miles upstream along the Greenway looking for birds and discussing recovery from the Almeda Fire and riparian habitat restoration.

Lithia Park tours held on Saturdays
Experience the history, flora and fauna of Lithia Park in Ashland during a guided tour led by volunteers at 10 a.m. on Saturdays through September.
The free walks are 60-90 minutes and open to locals and visitors alike. Meet guides at the front entrance of Lithia Park across from the Plaza.
The walks have been offered since 1989 by the Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission.
